Barb and Ellie are best friends despite their very different life philosophies. As the 1960s swirl around them, Barb tries to hold on to traditional southern values while Ellie is happy to go with the flow and take change as it comes. The two hatch crazy schemes and egg each other on, but they also support each other through phenomenally difficult times.
Both women struggle with their image of the ideal woman—a Donna Reed–style housewife who always has dinner, a martini, and a smile ready for her husband. As their lives fall apart and come back together again, both Barb and Ellie reevaluate this paradigm of feminine virtue.
Along the way, they get involved with John F. Kennedy’s campaign, meet the First Lady, and get stuck in Washington, DC, during a full-scale riot—and that’s not the end of their adventures. Deadly serious events will shake them and their friendship. They can’t stop the changes of the sixties from affecting them, so they both need to decide if that image of the ideal woman is worth hanging on to—or if it’s just holding them back, keeping them stuck in the onesies.
Stuck in the Onesies edition by Diana McDonough Literature Fiction eBooks
Stuck in the Onesies, a term from the child's game of Jacks, quickly becomes a metaphor for the lives of two young women raising their families in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. If you get stuck in the very first round of the game, the onesies, you play catch-up for the rest of the game. Barb Kincaid and Ellie Reilly are doing just that. Trying to raise their young children on a shoestring budget, with husbands who would rather be on the shooting range or watching football on television, poses challenges neither of them had anticipated. Along the way, they learn about racism, marital infidelity, betrayal, heartbreak, independence--and joy, the joy of lives well-lived, the joys of love and friendship and family.Diana McDonough has crafted a graceful, bittersweet tale, at once funny and sad and poignant. She speaks truth leavened with kindness and humor, shining a light on how adults grow up despite the many roadblocks along the way. Her novel made me laugh out loud and cry unashamedly. I anticipate it will haunt me for days to come.

Stuck in the Onesies edition by Diana McDonough Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Stuck in the Onesies begins as a darling tale of two women thrown together by the necessity of their husband's jobs, but evolves into a brilliantly poignant novel reflecting the evolvement of a deep, life-long friendship of two families, show-casing the struggles of the women (and men) in the early 1960's.
Diana McDonough uses the backdrop of the 1960s and the struggles women faced as US society began to change -- giving women more freedom in the way they dressed, in whether they stayed home or not, and whhhether they wanted to rotely wanted to do what their husbands expected to them. The main characters, Barb (a not necessarily independent DC housewife) and Ellie (a free-spirit, who lives in Cambridge, MD--the country in the 60s--is an independent, creative spirit with a weekend-only husband) meet because their husbands hope they will get along when Ellie moves to DC. The antics and dramas that ensure will make you laugh and pause and think.
This book is not a fairy-tale. Ellie and Barb do not end up in a 1970s split-level with great jobs, happy husbands and perfect kids. But life is not perfect. I was deeply moved by the novel -- the friendship between the two women and the two couples echoed that of one my parents had.
for a first novel, Ms. McDonough has outdone herself. Her characters are well rounded, and her story keeps your interest from start to finish, at times keeping me reading when I should have been doing other things.
BRAVO DIANA MCDONOUGH. I can't wait for a sequel.
This is a truly engaging and well-written story. The characters come alive and you really feel their joys, their sadness, their good times and their troubles. It's one of those books that is hard to put down, yet you don't want it to end. Ms. McDonough has skillfully combined an entertaining story with memories of the changing thoughts and practices in our society through the decades since the 1950's, and the story stays with you well after the book is read.
I loved this book and look forward to reading more books by this author.
Stuck in the Onesies was a great read! I loved the friendship that developed between the two women. Barb and Ellie became lifelong friends and while they were both married and had children of their own, they bonded in the way that felt so genuine and reminiscent of my own friendships. Raising children alongside your best friend is such an adventure and Diana McDonough captured those times so completely that, even though I did not grow up in the generation of Ellie and Barb, I could completely relate to these characters. You will laugh and cry along with these women. When you finish this book, it will stay with you for a long time. And you will feel the need to call your best friend to plan your next adventure.
Wow! Was this really Diana's first published novel? A true tale of friendship and devotion laced with historically accuracy invoking a plethora of emotions. From the heart-breaking to the heart-warming, I found myself immersed in the 60s housewife lifestyle as I journeyed through the ups & downs of Barb and Ellie in their various life stages. With complex characters coming-of-age throughout, Stuck in the Onesies draws you in and welcomes you to stay awhile.
One of the best books I've read in a long time. Although I wasn't alive when events in the book took place, I was definitely able to feel the mood of the time. Terrific writing.
This book was delightful. I wanted to read it slowly, and digest every word written by my friend and former colleague Diana. I managed to allow myself only a few chapters a night for the first week, but by this past weekend, I was hooked on the characters. I read the remainder of the book Saturday evening and Sunday evening. Of course, as with the ending of any good story, I was left feeling that I had lost my good friends in the book. Great work Diana. I hope that you will write more books. For those of you who don't know me, I am NOT the Roberta in the book.
Great read. In addition to being a great story of friendship, betrayal and forgiveness; I grew up in DC metro area in the 1960's and early 70's - was fun to relive some memories from Hot Shoppes, Capital Plaza and going to OC.
